Are you talking print or television. I’m a reporter on the print side and I majored in journalism. That’s your best bet regardless of the type. Most schools have journalism broken down by concentration so there will be your basic classes that everyone has to take then you will take classes in your concentration ie. print, radio/television or public relations. You’ll have to take English regardless of your major and just stay on top of current events by reading the paper and watching the news.

Take subjects that you’d like to report on: science, politics, economics, film study, law or whatever you’re interested in. Then take subjects that help you to write and well: english and/or philosophy. You should have at least one humanities subject. If you want to report the news on TV or radio, join clubs that will teach you to speak articulately: debating or public speaking.

Keep up with current affairs. I don’t mean which movie star is getting divorced, but which political policy is getting implemented, where has a coup just taken place, which soccer club was relegated for match-fixing. Start practising writing as often as possible. It doesn’t matter what you write, as long as you keep writing. You will get used to it, so that you relax and your writing improves.

You can do journalism at honours level at many universities. This helps, but what gets you a job is your portfolio. So, submit things to the student newspaper, or get a slot on the student radio station.
