What do I need to be a psychologist?

What degree, education? graduate school? How about the salary, benefits?

And would I work in a hospital or would I work in my own office, seeing my clients.

All I know is if you really want a job, you need your masters. I knew of someone who finished school but could not find a job because everyone required a master’s degree.

check out iseek.org. They have a lot of info you can check out.

okay first of all. stop thinking that far ahead. You’re already thinking of advertising? Christ.

And second, there are so many fields in psychology. A psychologist isn’t always someone who sees patients or gives therapy to clients. That is only a small (but popular) sector of psychology itself. A psychologist can be in one of 2 types of psychology, applied psychology (it can be in ANY setting: industrial, educational, legal, forensic, health, sport) where you use your knowledge of psychology as a tool in these settings, or research psychology, where you conduct research for a public or private university or corporation. You CANNOT possibly even know what type of psychology you want to get into, and where you want to apply it right now.

But to even be considered a psychologist in virtually all these fields (in the US/Can) you need to have a doctoral degree (PhD). That’s A LOT of school.

Anyways, the point is, you really shouldn’t be even thinking this far ahead. All you should really be doing is peeking an interest in psychology, and maybe thinking about the specific field you would like to be in. It will all be a gradual decision though as you move through your education.

For now.. just enroll in a good university, with a Psychology undergraduate program… and take it from there.

You need to decide which type of psycologist you want to be because there are the clinical type and the research type. the clinical ones work with clients whom they come to know pretty well over time while the other do research and studies on people who volunteer but whom they may never see again after the study is over.

Need to be prepared to complete the masters or doctorate level of study. Psycologists work in a variety of places. Police departments hire them to evaluate the officers. Hospitals hire them. Some work in their own private practices and build their own clientel. They work in consulting marketing to tell entrepreneurs how people will feel about some proposed new product that they plan to develop. The state govt hires them to evaluate troubled youths. they work a lot of places. its a good field.

they say it doesnt matter where you get your undergraduate degree so i would go for the cheapest place. then you will have more money for your graduate school.

All I know is you will have to go to grad school for 8 years after you get your 4 year degree. You will most likely have to get your own office either private or with a hospital, not necessarily in the hospital though.

I think thats right, could be wrong though.
