They want to see your unique personality and if it would add diversity to their student body. So you don’t want to talk about your great grades or diligent attributes–those should already be apparent from your GPA and SAT scores, and they’re certainly not unique. And of course, they want to see your level of writing, but at the same time, don’t use a thesaurus on every word–they would know.

Good grammar and writing style, novel ideas, thoroughness and completeness, and making sure you don’t sound like you’re writing what they wanna hear. Be honest, and speak about what makes you different, and what makes you worthy of attending their college.

Read the prompt carefully. Usually, they are looking for writing ability, creativity, and fluency. Usually they want a personal statement, something about who you are, your educational goals, who inspired you, etc.
