A lot more than people think.

you can be a translator for politicians, corporations, or anyone else who might want to pay big bucks for real-time translations. You can go with a more academic route and study dead languages. There are still a lot that we cannot translate completely or at all. Linguistics can be a huge advantage in developing newer and more effective computer programming languages. You can work for governments (and/or corporations) developing codes and ciphers. You can teach the languages you speak or teach English to non-English speakers regardless of the languages they speak. You can translate writings (books, articles, technical manuals, poetry,- this is most challenging as poetry needs to be translated far more figuratively than literally- etc…).

Linguistics is a pretty intense field of study. If you are interested in it then first consider why you are interested in it. That is what will lead you toward a career. It is an incredibly rewarding field if you are into it. Your options for classes will give you a general idea of the work you can do. Your professors and classmates can help you to realize the vast amount of choices you will have.

If you really love the nuances of language, the aspects that make even completely unrelated languages similar and similar languages different, if you find the history and development of a single word to be amazing, and if you find it astounding that we have this ability to communicate complex and abstract ideas through relatively random assortments of sounds and illustrations then linguistics is a great field for you. If you have no interest in any of the above you might want to choose another major. It will be easier to study and easier to find a career you like.
