I’m in college and im an accounting major. I took a test today in accounting and my mind went blank. I have test anxiety and ADD, its been on my record since high school. i talked to my professor after class and he looked at me as if it was a joke. I just want him to go over some matieral b/c im still in the area where it just leaves my mind easily. He told me to go to his office on monday, but im really nervous b/c he looked at me like i was some sort of idiot. I want this more than anything and im trying so hard but he seems to be not believing me. should i tell him i have test anxiety? or should i just go with the flow.

You should absolutely tell him that you have test anxiety and ADD. ADD is a disease just like any other, and professors have to respect that. I have depression and missed a bunch of classes; I told my prof (who was quite angry) and she was very understanding. Just be sure not to make it seem like you want ‘special treatment’ or want him to be easier on you than the other kids.

You might have misconstrued his look. Professors are real people and they have problems too, and they will understand yours.

You should not just go with the flow; you should visit the professor on Monday and be prepared to ask him for help in specific areas. Also, I believe many, many students of all ages experience anxiety before a test — this is not unusual, nor is it a medical condition. The best way to avoid it is to prepare well and to begin preparations well in advance of the test. As for the ADD, you should have brought this up with the professor BEFORE your test; bringing it up on the day your mind went blank during a test certainly does make you less credible. Good luck with this, and don’t give up!

If this professor makes you that nervous, ask someone from your special services department at the school to attend with you. Many colleges have grant funded offices called TRIO offices. It is their responsibility to intervene on your behalf when you have a documented learning disability. This service also provides free tutoring to students.

If you are not sure about whether or not your college provides these services, check with your academic advisor. If not, your advisor can also act on your behalf to intervene with this teacher.

Good luck.

hey im a college student also and ive heard that people that have ADD get extra time on their tests due to the fact that a student with ADD may know the answers but cannot get them down in the alloted time due to their ADD… just explain yourself and if he wants proof then give it to him…professors are usually very understanding…GOOD LUCK! 🙂

He probably just didn’t understand which is why he asked you to go to his office. Professors are there to help you, take advantage of it.

His job is to be understanding. A lot of professors are jerks though.
