Generally, you need to have a bachelors degree in a subject – hopefully one you like – and you want to learn more about that subject. Then you look to see which schools offer a masters degree in the subject matter you have a degree in –

Say you want a masters degree in social work – you get a bachelors – also called an under graduate degree – in psychology, sociology or a related area – then pick an MSW program with an emphasis that you want for grad school.

If you want a MS in geology or accounting – your undergrad degree must be in that area – or one closely related – or they won’t accept you. (Because you won’t be able to keep up with the advanced courses in that area that the other grad students are ready for).

Some universities require the graduate record exam (GRE) to get in.

Most require 1-2 years of study. Some have comprehensive exams you must pass to be declared proficient, most have a thesis requirement – which often must include original research.

So ask questions about each of these areas before you commit to a program.

Then figure out how to pay for it…. they may have teaching assistant jobs available for you….

good luck
