Depends which 4 classes. If there’s a lot of reading and writing assignments, it will take at least as much time outside class to prepare for each class session as it will inside the classroom. Also, some classes have labs that take up additional time.

12 hours, which is considered a full load, is a lot for a person who is working, too. I’ve got a couple degrees and have done some post-grad classes, and I can tell you, he’ll have plenty to do with 12 hours. Best to let him get used to the way college works, which professors he likes to listen to and can work with, etc., this first semester, and then if he decides to go for more hours the second one… no problem.

If he overloads himself with too many classes, he risks not doing well in them because he won’t have the time to apply himself as he should to each one. And you know how important it is to have a really good GPA in college. Most people who hire college graduates only look at the overall GPA when they look at a person’s college transcript, anyway.

Relax. College level work is hard, and freshman classes usually require a lot of writing and so forth, so he’d do well to stick with the 4 classes he’s probably already chosen.

Most college students in their first semester have a hard time adjusting and balancing their time. The advisor said this because he knows that working part-time can affect grades, school performance…etc. 4 class is still 12 units, which means he’s still a full time student. If he handles 4 classes well his first semester, than he can bump it up to 5 in the spring…

Usually 4 classes is full time (if each class is 3 credits to hit 12 hours). I would recommend that many people start out taking the mininum full time status. I did this my first semester, and then increased the load the following semester to 5 classes, and then to 6-7 after that. This way, it helps you adjust over time while getting used to college.

Four classes is plenty. Most students take about about two classes a day. I’m currently taking five and everything’s going good for me. I wouldn’t recommend taking any more than that.

If you want your son to be overworked, then do not listen to his advisor. They pay him for a reason.

This is not high school, mommy. He will have plenty of homework.
