I got my MBA in Accounting from there, and my bachelors degree from a traditional four year private school. I chose the online degree program for my MBA because I wanted to work full time, and was having trouble finding a school where I coudl work my day job withoput interruption, and still get my degree in a couple of years time.

I liked the online degree program. I found that it did save me time as far as not having to travel to a classroom, and the flexibility in being able to set my own schedule instead of having to make time for specific class schedules and such. It was still a lot of work though, I had to write a lot of papers and that took time.

Some people have said that it is not that highly regarded as a degree, and I’m sure some people find it to be less because it is new and is done online. I have not had that problem so far. I list it in my resume as the online degree program, and I have a job now where they were only looking at people with bachelors and CPA, or MBA. I was hired out of 25 applicants.

I thought it was a good experience, but I will warn you that it is expensive…a decent amount more than a more traditional college, but convenience can cost more.

Good luck!

Judge Orders University False Claims Case to Trial

A fraud case against the nation’s largest for-profit school will be allowed to continue, a federal judge ruled Monday. The lawsuit, filed under the federal False Claims Act, accuses the University of Phoenix of violating federal rules by offering employees incentives based on the number of students they enrolled. District Judge Garland E. Burrell rejected the university’s contention that a $9.8 million settlement with the federal government should end the lawsuit. Henry Weinstein, LA Times 08/21/2007

Most large public universities off a wide variety of degree programs online. Most smaller public schools offer a few degree programs, and a lot of individual courses online. These will be better respected than the University of Phoenix, in addition to being much cheaper, at least if you pick a school in your home state.

My co-worker, who had an undergraduate degree in art, was burnt out from her graphic design job working in advertising. She went to University of Phoenix to get a Master’s in Education. She worked full time, went to UOP, and raised her two little girls all at the same time. It was hard, but for her it was worth it, because now she teaches high school art, which she finds much more rewarding than lining the pockets of advertising industry. I ran into her recently and she seems much happier.

Ask any HR person in any company and they will tell you that when they see “University” of Phoenix on a CV or resume it immediately goes to the bottom of the pile. The ‘degrees’ or ‘diplomas’ offered by the “University” of Phoenix have no standing whatsoever in either the academic or the ‘working’ world. They will very gladly take your money…and sign you up….but at the end of the day you get practically nothing for your money/time/effort.
