i was thinking of taking AP psych next year, but are you required to take psych in college if you’re majoring, in let’s say, engineering? are foreign languages required in college as well?

I am a computer science major from CSU – Long Beach, and yes, you have to take a Psych course, or a course thats related to Psych as a General Education Requirement for your degree.

Yes, you are in college to specialize in your career field, but colleges have a focus on “higher learning,” thus you have to learn general information and take courses completely not related to your major to better understand the universe you live in. You can take these GE (General Ed) courses along with your major courses, or just get these GE courses out of the way in the first few years of college and then focus on your major courses. I recommend the former, as major courses can get pretty hard if you’re taking 3 or 4 major courses back-to-back. Have a balance of GE and Major courses to make things easier for you.

call the college you are planning on attending or look on their website. I took AP psych and it was a required class, but my AP score was a 3 and I would rather take the class and get a better grade then the AP. colleges grade more on college class grades then AP scores.

now take AP psych for a better GPA. in FL that’s an additional 0.08 added on. when i took the AP test two years ago, they covered alot of the last few chapters of the book on types of therapy and society. so if you’re willing to do the extra work but dont pass the AP exam, you’re like screwed, because a score of 3 means passing and colleges like to see 4’s or 5’s.

if you took the required years of language in high school you might not be required to take then in college. but again. check the school’s website. especially the engineering program page of the site.

Psychology would fulfill a social science requirement, which any accredited college would require regardless of degree.

Foreign language is usually a requirement at most colleges these days. Length of time depends but two full years at the elementary level is the norm for a 4 year program. Most will allow one to waiver out if they already have second language skills, however (and this is done by an oral/written test like reading a newspaper in the foreign tongue out loud, and summarizing the story in both the foregin tongue and English, so don’t even think of BSing your way out if you don’t have the skills).
