To be a Psychiatrist?

I am very interested in becoming a psychiatrist one day, what are courses i have to take to become a psyciatrist throughout my senior year of highschool and college? Do colleges offer psychiatry as a major, because i have never seen that before?

Psychiatry is a medical specialization. You need to go to med school. So, you need a fair amount of science courses in college and then would apply to med school. After that, you would specialize in psychiatry.

Counseling and psychology are not the same as psychiatry. They can’t give meds and are not medical doctors.

A Psychiatrist has a medical degree. So as an undergrad you will have to take a pre-med track (a year of bio, two years of chem, etc). You could major in psychology and do a pre-med track. You could major in biology and easily complete a pre-med track with a minor in psychology.

In the UK you have to qualify as a Doctor first and then specialise, much in the same way that surgeons, physicians and other disciplines do. You could consider becoming a Clinical Psychologist which takes you into the same clinical dicipline but without having to cut people up and risk contracting a nasty disease but of course it doesn’t carry the same kudos as medicine and certainly woudn’t pat as much;-)

This is how it is in the UK but I’m assuming that it is much the same in the US.

you should take Advanced Placement psychology in HS if you can…major in psychology in college…get a master’s and then a PhD. Psychiatrists also need to get a MD in order to prescribe meds.
