All those people who say that you should do it right away because later on you won’t be in “school mode” are absolutely wrong! I’ve been teaching marketing for 28 years, and I find that after a few years in the work world, many people are dying for the stimulation of further education! Furthermore, frankly, MBAs are not meant for people without substantial work experience. You won’t get much out of it if you do it right away. It will be just another academic exercise, even if you get good grades. The ones who get a meaningful education are those who take time off to work first. Furthermore, your more experienced classmates will resent you for your lack of knowledge, and your professors won’t appreciate you anywhere near as much as if you brought some post-college experience to class. Finally, you may be disappointed with the job possibilities if you do it right out of school. Many people read about high salaries earned by MBAs, but fail to recognize that this reflects the fact that these people have subtantial work experience and are NOT looking for entry-level jobs. No one will give you a 6-figure salary because you spent another year or two in school right after graduation. My very strong advice: Take 3-5 years off to work before going back for a master’s degree.

That answer really depends on what you do while you are an undergraduate student. If while you are an undergraduate student and you have time to get a marketing internship or volunteer to get experience…going right into a masters program may work. However, if you don’t get as much experience while you are getting your bachelors, you could take a year off to work and get some real work experience. Getting into graduate school is really competitive and universities want to see those students who have something to offer such as experience in the field and a certain leadership quality that will add to their graduate program. Talk to mentors of yours in marketing, professors in the graduate program, and other students that are in the program now and you are sure to make the best decision for yourself. You are better off getting an MBA with a concentration in marketing than a MA in marketing.

If you want to get an MBA, you should get one from a ranked program — because it will greatly improve your ability to get a good job with a high salary. The top programs want you to have three to five years of work experience.

Very few MBA students live on campus.

i say get it after your bachelor’s. many people, after not attending school for awhile, don’t want to go back after all those years. so while you’re still in “school mode,” i would get the masters now. good luck!
