Should I drop my American Dream class?

Alrighty… I am currently taking 17 credits. That is 5 regular 3 credit courses and then 1 gym activity and a lecture that I need to take. I can’t take the lecture without the activity…

Alrighty… So my 5 classes consist of:

math

craft of writing 4

human interest writing

advertisting, copywriting and promotion

The American Dream

The American Dream class is an elective and I don’t need it, per se. I’m a writing major, and that’s a history/english class… English being literature not writing.

It’s a lot of work that I don’t have to do, so I’m wondering if I should suck it up or if I should drop it, because I’ll have enough credits anyways.

If you are enjoying it, keep it. If it is merely an unnecessary burden, drop it (I can’t imagine why you are taking something you don’t need unless you find it interesting, though).

Well I was going to say “drop it”… The American Dream strikes me as a bit of a (sorry to say this) silly course. Where I went to school it would have been some looser 60s reject of a professor (with the intelectual ability of an unusually stupid pine tree) whining about how bad America is for three months. For some reason lots of professors seem to think that displaying a contempt for their homeland (and an inexcusable ignorance of American History) makes them seem smart…but I digress… in any case if it is anything like what it would have been like at my school, it is a class you could do without.

But then I remembered something… one of the worst things about reporters is that they learn HOW to write… but they know NOTHING about the subject they are writing on. When I was in the Army I saw lots of news reports about the Army and most of them were badly done… not because the reporter was biased, or stupid (though many are both) but because the poor reporter simply did not know anything about what the report was about….and they didn’t have the time, ability, or energy to do the research. (This makes it VERY easy to fool most reporters if you want to). I’ve seen the same thing in other things I’ve studied… (like the oil, industry) though they do seem to do a pretty good job on covering the law….

So while “The American Dream” may or may not be a good class, and may or may not be worth your time….you should certianly study something besides just writing… a good writer doesn’t just know HOW to write, but WHAT to write about too.

If you don’t need the class and you think it’ll take away from the other classes you’re taking, drop it.
