The Thinker

Is this plagiarism?

I wrote an article in Spanish for my Spanish class and had someone go over it. They corrected it. The thing is, mine was not so great to begin with, but with the corrections made it was good. I did all the writing and the ideas and everything was mine, but i had help on some of the grammer and vocab with the article…. is this considered plagerism?

My teacher wants to talk to me because it was so good and i am not the best student. I am worried she might think it was plagerism!

What do you think? I wrote it, but someone corrected it to make it good…. is this bad?

It’s not plagiarism, but it could be cheating if you were expected to do the work yourself. Frankly, I would consider it cheating if your teacher did not invite you to seek outside help (especially in a language class), but ultimately it’s up to your teacher.

I would volunteer that you asked for help over a website so she knows it was an “honest” mistake. (You might even want to bring in an uncorrected copy of the assignment and the Q&A page in question, so she can see exactly how much you did on your own.)

Hopefully, she either thinks it’s not cheating or has you do an alternate assignment to make up for the one you didn’t quite do yourself.

You got what we in the business refer to as a “tutor”. Last I checked, having a tutor help you with homework was not considered plagerism. Had your tutor written the paper instead of helping you to perfect your grammer and vocab use, then it would have been plagiarism, but last I checked, getting help in subjects you are struggling with was considered good, not poor study skills.

It is not plegiarism. But tell your teacher that someone helped you with corrections. Its actually the smart way of writing anything to have someone go over it and point out the things you can do better.

It’s not plagiarism — which is when you COPY someone else’s work and claim it as your own. However, it may be considered cheating IF the teacher expects you to turn in your OWN work with no “editing” or commentary from someone else.

If you had a friend edit it and made the necessary changes, then it isn’t plagiarism. If your friend wrote out paragraphs and you copied them into your final, that is considered plagiarism.

No, it’s called help, not plagiarism. Your teacher should be thrilled you took the time and energy to review and revise.

No. This is the way that you learn things. When your teacher meets you, tell her how you improved it. She should appreciate your resourcefulness in doing so.
