Why do people waste their time and join sororities and fraternities?

All they’re doing is buying their friends.

Although I’ve never been interested in the Greek system myself, I do see the benefits. I don’t see it as buying friends. Most of the people I know that are in sororities or fraternities are very out-going and would have no problem finding great friends. Also, if someone wasn’t likable, no fraternities or sororities would ask them to join. No matter your income level, the current members of the organization are the ones who decide whether to offer an invitation for you to join.

Greek organizations do a lot more than just providing people with a social network. Many engage in community service, helping with organizations like Habitat for Humanity or organizing fund-raisers. For example, one of the sororities on my campus is having a designer jean sale to raise money for Service for Sight. Other Greek organizations focus a great deal on academics. A friend of mine is a member of Phi Mu, a sorority that focuses very much on academic strength and that is recognized for it. These organizations can and do offer the students an easily accessible network for help when it comes to classes and schoolwork.

I agree with you. Joining a fraternity or sorority is senseless. It seems like they spend much time partying and drinking. You are very wise!

I wanted to meet people outside of my current circle (meaning people outside my major, dorm, and not in the few groups I was already involved in). I also liked the amount of community service my group does, that certainly wasn’t a waste. I wasn’t hazed and I don’t know anyone that actually was. Don’t worry so much about what other people choose to do with their time.

Unfortunately, business is often conducted in this same way. This Social conduct is an accepted practice in business.

Often it is who you know (not what you know) in the business world, to become a success. By joining a fraternity, this improves you social skills.(BS tactics) in order to ‘fit in’ with the business community.

i joined one my senior year. Since I was a senior I actually knew everyone in it already before I even joined, but it allowed me to see a different side to all of my friends that I had never seen before, and they also got to see different sides of me.

It is a good way to show you work well with others and it looks good when you try to apply for jobs. Also, it is a great place to mentor others or to find a mentor.

Usually people go because either their families want them to, or they have a sense of insecurity. Many of those people want to stay with people of their own gender without being in a religious school. In many cases, these people have social disorder, or simply socially inept (nerds).

Because I think it is human nature to be wanted, be part of a group and be close to a group of people.
