I’m glad you want a job. But take what you can get for making money and don’t worry about what the colleges think.

Here’s what to do to impress a college. Bring your parents along on the tour. Then they will think you are serious about attending college and that you have your parents backing you. They will see dollar signs.

You don’t need a job. It is one component of a package. A lot will also depend on where you want to go to college. Some of the large state universities will focus on SAT or ACT scores, GPA and class rank, and might not even look at a resume or list of activities. Your package consists of your test scores, your academic profile, your essay, recommendations, an interview if you have one with an admissions office, and activities including clubs, community service and any sports. It’s hard to see how having a job at a fast food restaurant would be weighted by a college more than building houses for Habitat for Humanity, right? The package doesn’t have to be 100% complete to make you a very desirable candidate. On the other hand, if you’re looking for discretionary scholarships and grants, a scholarship review panel might decide that you should have gotten a job and tried to earn some money to pay for school instead of being in that anime club…but you’re getting into very subjective assessments. Consider putting your community service in the employment area, as uncompensated employment, or leave it blank. Neither one should hurt you at all if you have other stuff in your package that looks good.

Internships in whatever field you want to go into are always best, but it’s hard to find them being 16. Those are the best but if you can’t get one in what you want to do then i’m sure any job will work. It’s always great to do volunteer work on the side, it’s not fun but colleges love when you do that sort of stuff.

I had a job as an assistant at this shipping company..I just filed papers and ran errands, I did volunteer work at an animal shelter too and from what I’ve heard that really helped my admission.

Any job is good, but if you’re out to impress colleges, try to get a job working in a field you’re interested in. Figure out what you might be interested in taking as a major, and find a related field that will give you a summer job or internship.

I thought I wanted to be a chemist for a while – I spent my summers volunteering at a local estuary, doing water testing for them. It was cool to work in a chem lab for the summer, and do field tests.

Fly On The Wall
I had played a musical instrument semi-professionally for a few years while in high school. I think this worked favorably on my college applications. Too bad it wasn’t enough for a scholarship.

It depends on what school you are planning on attending. Some it doesn’t matter and others it does.
