is this appropriate for this job situation?

i’m a pre-medical student, and i had planned to become a lab assistant in a research university i planned to transfer to. i’m in a community college right now, and i’ll be transferring in a couple years or so. one of my professors told me about a lab assistant job opening, and asked if i was interested. i said yes, and i applied, but it turns out the job code wasn’t available yet. the science office said they would get back to me when there was a job code available. I know how what a lab assistant does in the research university I plan to attend (we hv to do it voluntarily, and its helping a professor doing research); however, my community college is not a research one, so I’m not exactly sure how it works. i have tried to look on the website, but there’s no further info on the job description. i don’t know any other students that were former lab assistants there either. Would it be appropriate to ask my professor the job description or would that be unprofessional?

I don’t see any reason why it would be unprofessional… I’d go ahead and ask.

In the meantime, you can look on other job sites because there are usually listings for research assistants (I see postings all the time in the government job bank in my area) and you can get an idea of what they do. I know there’s a lot of reading involved.

It sounds like you’re taking a lot of initiative, that’s great! Stay focused and take those extra steps – it will make you all the better candidate for med school and afterwards. Good luck!

Definitely ok to ask….every lab I have worked in has done something entirely different. If you have the name of the professor that runs the lab you can also look on pubmed or google scholar to see if you can read up on previously published papers to get a better idea of what the research focus are in that lab.

I see no harm in asking
