Is it possible to do a thesis on something not related to what your professor does?

As in, do somethin which you want to?

Is there flexibility in that?

(I am asking about psychology masters btw)

MM is right. If your professor/adviser cares about your success he will guide and direct you on what to do for your thesis and offer suggestions. If you have a topic in mind and he approves of your topic then it should be ok even if it is not part of his/her research.

I do not know if your department will require you to do a defense of your dissertation, but if they do and if your topic is not related to what your adviser does, I am sure they will get you to find someone that knows a bit about your topic to sit on your defense committee.

In short, It is possible, depends on you and your adviser.

I am not certain what you mean. Can you be more specific? What you professor does? What does that mean. What he does in the classroom setting; what he does at h ome in the garden; what he does when on vacation; ?

If you are asking about doing a thesis outside the parameters of the subject your major is in, what would be the point? If you are taking a Masters in Psychology, why would it be beneficial to do a thesis about the Mechanics of Engineering the Space Vehicle to land on Mars?

Come on, use some common sense that obviously got you this far. Or did you buy your BS

I think the term for your “professor” you’re looking for here is “advisor.” S/he’s the one you should be approaching with this question. S/he’ll either be encouraging or try to point you to someone else in the department who’d be a better match. If there’s absolutely no one in the department who’s a good fit, you may need to consider transferring to a different school.

It is probably better not to make him feel invalidated by your choice of topics, unless you tell him that one of his ideas led you to a field of inquiry some of the other psych profs haven’t thought of.

I don’t see why you have to do a thesis based on what your prof does. You basically pick a thesis based on your studies (if you can pick whichever topic you want and make it fit your studies, then why not) and get your prof to approve and then you are off.
