Is a 3.7GPA enough for Berkeley?

I have taken probably some of the hardest courses in my school, and came out with a 3.7 GPA. Is this ok? I know its a little lower than others, but that is because I took such hard courses (tons of AP and honors and a few IB). I also go to a very competitive and well known high school. Is this GPA enough?

You can’t tell just by GPA. Berkeley is going to want to know what makes YOU special. Yeah, good GPA, but what else? Everyone applying there is going to have an excellent GPA, and some are going to be higher than your 3.7. But, what makes you different? Did you play sports? Were you on Varsity? What do you do in your spare time? Do you work? How many hours a week? Were you involved in clubs at school? What’s your ACT/SAT score? Did you win any competitions (writing, etc.)? ALL of this is going to be important. G’luck!

It’s certainly enough to get you consideration, but there are so many factors that go into UC admissions–SAT/ACT scores, extra-curriculars, essay, recommendations, class rank, etc. Additionally, this year, (and probably in years past), there was a lot of talk about people getting in with worse scores and grades than their classmates, as if there were no rhyme or reason to it. (What it really means is that, while grades and scores are important, they’re not everything.)

You have the grades to apply, so go for it. Just make sure to have a plan B, C, D, E, F, etc. . . Apply to several UCs, and maybe a few Cal States/privates as well (assuming you are in California. If you’re not in California, it’s even harder to get into Berkeley). Good luck.
