By scientist, if you mean running your own research lab, designing research projects, overseeing the experiments, analyzing the results, and publishing research articles, then you will need to obtain a Ph.D. After you have a Ph.D, you will probably need to do what’s called a post-doc where you work in someones lab to obtain more experience. The best way to look at it is, if M.D.s do residencies after graduating but before they can practice, then Ph.D.s do post-docs.

If you want to be able to work in a lab under the direction of a Ph.D., then a Bachelors degree would be enough, although master’s degree would make you more marketable and give you experience having your own research project, working in a lab, etc.

One thing you might want to consider is how much you want to be in the lab performing the experiments. If my experience, Ph.D.s running the lab spend very little time (if any) in the lab performing experiments. It’s mostly the technicians and post-docs performing experiments. As the scientist running the lab, you will spend most of your time designing the experiments, writing grants to try and fund your projects, writing manuscripts to be published and working on presentations.

Hope that helps.

A bachelor’s degree in microbiology gives you sufficient knowledge and laboratory skill for an entry-level, technician’s position in the industrial sector. In order to become a scientist, where you are designing experiments and leading the research effort, you need a graduate degree — you need a PhD.
