What you do now really depends on you. Typically newbies in broadcast journalism look high and low and end in a small TV market. From there they work their way up to larger markets. I live in one of these markets and have seen former local field reporters on Fox News, the Weather Channel, CNN, etc. If jumping around is not your style, look at teaching at a community college or college. With an MA you can teach intro courses. You might also learn to use the Internet. Web Marketing is coming on fast and your can do local consulting in most any community.

Well, the best idea is to try free/cheap work, such as an internship or nonprofit, as mentioned above. Your MA training will eventually be noticed and you’ll move up to something better.

Once you get settled, though, you should complain to your graduate institution. They should have been the ones counseling you on your career and setting you up with internships while you were still in school. If Yahoo Answers is your best option for career advice after just having completed a graduate program, a faculty advisor *definitely* wasn’t doing his/her job.

A Communication degree is a pretty broad degree. You can get into politics as well as journalism. Also, public relations or any type of media outlet. I have a bachelor degree in Communication, but I am not working with my degree. You can also go into sales–pharmaceutical sales. But, with a Masters you deserve to get a good job and d@mn good paying job as well.

Start calling all the newspapers and radio stations. If you have no experience, try to get an entry level job so you can build a portfolio. Or, contact someone in the field to pick their brain. Call your professors and ask them too if they know any contacts.

My friend has the same degree and he temped for awhile while looking for the perfect job. He got an internship with NPR and eventually got a marketing job with the peace corps. it took a couple years to land the perfect job but it was well worth the wait!

My major was theater/technical theater…I own a business that has NOTHING to do with it. My opinion…I should have picked a smarter major.
