I graduate in 2008 from college, business major without a 3.0 Should I kill myself??

I am kicking myself for the fact that I don’t have a 3.0 GPA. My GPA right now is a 2.63 I plan on trying really hard for my next two semesters and possibly taking classes in the winter to try to raise it a little more but I don’t know what else to do. I am very upset with myself and it looks like most jobs want a 3.0 or more. If I don’t put my GPA on my resume then it will look bad and all I can say about why it is low is that I have been depressed at times and I don’t want to get into that. I am a communications minor and my grades are better there then in business. I am absolutely miserable and to top it off, I am extremely worried about next yr my final year. Please help me, I need some advice.

No, you shouldn’t kill youself. See if your college offers summer or break courses and see if you can take them. If they offer some electives like art or some such, then it may help boost your GPA. Talk to your counselor and proffessors and see what they say. Proffessors have already been in the business world usually. Perhaps they can help give a good recommendation or talk to the company you want to apply to. For your next year final, set up a study schedule. Get some of your friends together and study with them–make sure that you make the situation clear that you need to pass this so they don’t try to take you out to some bars instead of studying. IF your absolutely miserable, just think about something good. Try to get away from college during a weekend and go out on a road trip to a park or visit your family. Try to think about the positive things. Sure you don’t have a 3.0, but a number doesn’t make up a person. If your dedicated, have previous work experience, good recommendations, and a good person I’m sure you’ll be fine. If not, try going to businesses around the college you go to. Some companies do try and hire from colleges because sometimes they may be alumni themselves. I hope this helps. You can tough it through–it’s not that long away until 08. Hold out and it’ll be worth your while in the long run. Company’s shouldn’t pressure you about your less than 3.0 GPA too much. Just give them so many good things other than that to look at that they simply can’t refuse you. Maybe try and internship and, if they like what they see, they may offer you a job or have one lined up for you when you graduate!

An overachiever. I understand, I am the exact same way. Graduating college is quite the accomplishment. Don’t beat yourself up over a low gpa. I would not even put the gpa, and if it is asked in thei ntervew, be honest, and maybe give a brief explanation about why it is low. Like in Freshman year you had to support yourself and with a job, fresh out of high school, you didn’t know how to handle yourself, but this was something you have taugh yourself. Or maybe you took really hard classes or 15 units at once while working full time. Putting a gpa down is the same thing as putitng down your race. It gives hiring managers another chance to prejudge you and make unfair accessments.

You may not find your dream job right out of college, but you WILL find something. Afterall, you do have a college degree and that’s more than a lot of people can say for themselves.

After you’ve been in the work world for a few years, (and this is where it gets good), nobody will care what GPA you had in college. What they will care about is that you have a college degree AND work experience, and that you accelerated at your last job.

So, work hard your last year in college, of course, but don’t stress too much about.

well here is how it goes a low GPA will not help you get a job on your own…But the rule in business is WHO you know not WHAT your know. I also had around a 2.7 when i graduated and i got a job at a very respected firm which is the #1 in thier industry. Also ake sure you have an interernship at a big name company and not some stupid **** internship. But remmeber it helps to know some one I was practally handed my job, but i have been here for a while b/c i am able to do my job well.

Dwelling on what’s done won’t make it better. If that GPA is not reflective of your abilities, then you might start out in a worse job than you’d like, but you’ll rise back up quickly enough. There aren’t a lot of unemployed college graduates out there, especially with degrees in practical subjects. Even then, there are a lot of people with below 2.6 GPAs.
