There should be a list of requirement for your application. Check with the school you are going to. If they require one it will be stated with the other application requirements such as letters of recommendation and application fees. Most colleges and Universities have a website which lists the requirements for admission into any degree program.

In my own experience, bascially having already been accepted into my M.S. and Ph.D. programs before I officially applied (talked with the faculty beforehand + nice academic record), the statement of purpose wasn’t really a big deal at all. I just wrote something down so I had a piece of paper to submit.

Now, if you’re applying sight-unseen. . . then I’d be a bit more concerned about what you say. (And I’d also make sure that the grammar’s good and it’s very clear what you’re trying to say.) Statements of purpose are tricky, but if you know of some area that interests you in particular, definitely mention that and discuss why you should be admitted into that field. Either way, what you’re really trying to do is sell yourself. . . so what you want to do is just try to point out why you feel you would be a good match for their program and a successful student (beyond what transcrips and the like might say).

I wouldn’t be terribly concerned about it, so long as your submit something that sounds intelligent and like you’re really interested in getting an opportunity to learn something from them.
