How do you choose a graduate school?

I am a college senior and will be going to grad school eventually.. I’m not sure if I will go right after graduating or part time after working for a while.

I don’t know anything about grad school… Any info will help!

To get into almost any grad school, you will need to take the GRE, a little like the SATs or ACTs, but for college grads. Start prepping. There are tons of study guides on the market.

You should definitely go to grad school directly after graduation. That way you won’t lose your academic rhythm.

Decide on what you want to major in in grad school. Then try to find a school with a good program that fits your overall needs and expectations. If you are looking for a top ranked program, US News & World Report is hard to beat, despite all the recent contorversy.

In general grad school is much more relaxed than undergrad. Student teacher ratios are smaller. You get more and better attention from professors. Grades are A’s and B’s on average. You have to work to get a C or lower.

I got my undergraduate in horticulture, and am now pursuing a masters in teaching, early childhood at South Carolina State University. You will have to pass a test to get in. I took the Miller’s Analogy test which is supposed to be easier than the other test. You have to choose which two words show the same relationship as the first two. For this I would study a book for whichever test you have to take.

What school you go to my be determined by your gradepoint average in college. Some schools have higher requirements. I went to teachers and asked them which school they would recommend. Then go to that school and see what the students there think of the program.

Good luck to you. Follow your dreams.

Because you’re advanced in your school career, if you give yourself a break, it may be hard to go back. I would say go right after you graduate.

Anyway… I would assume you’re happy with whatever you’re majoring in. Let’s say you’re working towards a BS in English. You would want to choose a grad school that caters to your chosen major. You would want to pick a school that has high marks in their English department. Maybe look for a professional or school advisor to help you and to guide you. Do you research, and give yourself time to look for the perfect school.
