Does attending an alternative school look bad on your college transcript?

I’m just wondering because I made the decision a couple months ago to go to an alternative school rather than stay in the public school system. I really did not learn much there and my choice for the transition was based on my WANTING to get a good education. The problem is, a lot of people frown down upon those who attend my school and a few people have mentioned that it probably won’t look good to colleges that I couldn’t achieve good grades in a “normal” school. I’m not stupid or anything. I’m actually recieving very good grades (Highest honor roll, currently) and my attendance record has improved dramatically. I’m just very afraid that I won’t be accepted by a good college of my choosing.

Well congratulations on making ‘highest honor roll’! I don’t personally know the answer to your question. I’m sure that many variables come into play when admissions is looking at prospective student applications such as GPA (grade point average), afterschool activities, volunteer work, SAT scores and one’s college essay, if required, when making their decision. Just fyi, if one goes to a community college for the two years, earning the 60 college credits or so, they may be able to transfer to a 4-year college or university without having to have taken the SAT’s (not that it sounds like an issue for you πŸ™‚

Perhaps you can call a few local colleges and ask to speak with an admissions counselor about it. And I’m not saying that your school is what I’m referring to, but some public school systems have an ‘alternative high school’ that remains part of that school system, however, the person’s high school diploma has the main public high school’s name engraved on it. If you are doing so much better where you are and the school is accredited by the department of education, I don’t see why you should return to a school that you seemed unhappy with. Perhaps calling some colleges can help you feel a bit better. Wishing you the best of luck!

Alternative school should look better for college admission vs. a public school. It shows a different approach to life and that is something that will stand out. Community service is in the community outside of school anyway, it shouldn’t make a difference. Do what you do to help people. Re-entering highschool is based on local laws. It’s usually fairly simple and a local homeschool support group is the best place to get advice on that. Good luck πŸ˜€

Every college is different. It won’t prevent you from being accepted by SOME good schools, but there might be one or two that reject you. (Of course, there might also be some that will PREFER that you went to an alternative school.)

Don’t let the townies get you down. Just do what you need to do to succeed. If you’re on the honor roll, that will work in your favor, and probably balance out everything else. Just keep on doing what you are, and seek out the right college. Remember, colleges are just like high schools…some of them might be right for you, and some of them might not be.

One simple sentence added to that entry will overcome this problem. Explain your joining that school in terms of an opportunity to study from a reputed teacher there.

Not neccesarily but one thing i would do is blow em out of the water and get good grades so they know you did something to get into the alt. school but if your getting great grades they will second guess the judgement on that.
