do you have to have a bachelors in some type of science to get into medical school?

I am currently a finance major in my senior year and have been seriously thinking of going a co mpletely different route and becoming a doctor. My question is if I decided to do this do I have to completely start from scratch or can I just apply to medical school and take it from there??? I wouldnt want to start all over again after being this close to graduating with a finance degree…

You can have any degree to get into Med School. However, you will need to make sure that you have finished prerequisite courses for med school that are most likely not in your finance major program.

Chem, Organic Chem, Biology, Physics (most chools)

YOu will need the larger series of each of those classes in order to get into med school.

So, no, it isn’t too late for you…you just need to make sure that you have the required science courses.

If you obtain your finance degree and then complete the prerequisite courses (and take the MCAT) you will be a fairly strong candidate for acceptance. You can complete the prereqs in two semsesters.

Your finance background will be a significant asset. Historically, physicians are poor money managers. Depending on what type of practice you pursue, your knowledge will put you into a senior management position fairly quickly.

Go for it and enjoy the journey!
