college sport after not playing a year?

I took off a year after HS and am planning on going to school in the Fall. In HS I played field hockey and am thinking that I might want to try out for the college team in the fall. Has anyone ever made a sports team without coming straight from HS? What are the chances I will even be considered if I go to tryouts and wasn’t a person who was scouted out by college recruiters? I know it’s possible, but I’d like to know what the chances are.

It depends on the college team. If the college is a division I-A team they might have no space on their team for you unless you do very well as a walk-on. Most Divsion I-A athletes have scholarships coming straight out of highschool.

If the College is a division II or III team it will be easier to make the team if you are pretty good. Division II has a few scholarships, while III doesn’t have any. Usually, DIV III teams will take anyone who is decent on the team.

The best thing to do is ask the department/coach if there are walk-on try-outs for the team and go for it.

If you don’t get on a team, look for intramural teams to play on.

Take a look at the link below. If you are trying out for

Division 1, then your abiliites have to be “next to impossible”

I’m an all-state outfielder, i had a walk-on invitation (because of my abilities and grades) from the university of miami, but i knew i was not going to start any time soon. So i decided to go to a closer college (Florida International University), which by the way the baseball team there has the worst grades in the country (literally), and i just got cut today.

Bottom line unless if you know you are really good and the coach is not some discriminative a$$, then go ahead and try out

At this age he needs to live within his means. If that is living in the dorm, then so be it. If he doesn’t like it, then he needs to get a job. You should not be expected to pay any of his debt. I also have a 19 year old that is in his second year of college and he plays basketball.I do not expect him to work, but he also doesn’t expect me to pay for any of his expenses. I pay his car insurance every month only because I need to feel that I am helping contribute to his college education even if it is just a small amount. He has student loans that I have co-signed for also. He works during the summer and makes halfway decent money. He saves this to get him through until income tax time, then his taxes usually get him through the rest of the year.
