College MAJOR!!! Biochem or bio????!?

I’m going to be a freshman at UCLA this fall, and I’m having trouble deciding majors! I plan on becoming a pharmacist… but I’m not 100% sure. I want a major that will allow me to go into a health profession career IF i do plan on being something else rather than a pharmacist! so is biochem or bio more broad enough to cover a wide range of careers??? BTW, i’m not pro status in my calc, so math courses may be extrememly tough on me.. yeah, i heard for biochem, the math is super advanced. soo please help??? biochem or bio? or something else?? THANKS!

If you think you might struggle a lot with the advanced math courses, I’d go with the biology degree. You want to have a great grade point average when it comes time to apply to grad school, whether you decide to go for pharmacy or not. If you’re not sure by then, you can always consider an MPH – Masters in Public Health, physical therapy, continuing in biology, etc. If I were you I’d talk to an advisor at UCLA first. She/he can probably give you the best advice once you tell them your future plans and your strengths/weaknesses. Also, keep in mind that you can always get a tutor to help you through the advanced math classes if you decide to go with biochemistry. Good luck.

OK, see what exactly you have to have as a background for pharmacy.

In my experience, a biology degree is a waste of time.

It prepares you either to teach or else medical school. Maybe it prepares you for physical therapy or O.T., those are masters level degrees. That’s it.

Far better to go into med technologist in case you want to be a med lab worker. Or work in a research lab.

If you major in biochem, isn’t research the typical route afterwards? Better to major, then, in lab technologist if you want research to be an alternate career.

If you can have any background for pharmacy school, pick an applied biology major, like biomedical engineering, etc. Go find out at your college what the possibilities and pick from those.

That way, when you graduate from college, you can actually walk into a job if you decide to do that instead of pharmacy school.
