First, there’s no such major as pre-med. Students who plan to go to med school sometimes call themselves pre-med, but they have a major in something else.

If you mean what kind of classes you’ll have to take in college, then you’ll have to take the requirements for your major for sure. To get into med school, you’ll also have to take a certain sequence of courses in biology, chemistry, physics and math. If you major in biology or chemistry, you’ll probably get most or all of those out of the way as part of the requirements for your major.

Most colleges have distribution requirements or a core. A core is a set of classes that every student must take. Distribution requirements just mean that you need to take a certain number of courses in subjects that are very unlike your major (e.g. literature classes for science majors, or vice versa). What these will be varies from school to school, and it includes foreign languages at probably something like half of selective colleges. A lot of schools let you out of this requirement if you get up to 3rd or 4th year of a single language in high school.

You will want to chose a science major, such as Biology, and then take the classes which they require. Your first two years will be just getting you G.E’s so take science for them, but you do have to meet other requirements, and be “rounded”. Pre-med is not a major though.. However to become pre-med you must to well in all of your classes becuse it is very hard to get into the pre-med program. It will consist of mostly science, psychology classes. A foreign language all depends on the college you go to. So get help from your councilor.

Pre Med is not a major program. It is solely a program in which you ensure that your requirements for medical school are satisfied.

Most schools today require at least first-year foreign language proficiency for a Bachelor’s Degree. They usually require 2 years of high school, or 1 year of college foreign languages to satisfy that requirement.

Getting into medical school is very competitive. It does not, however, require that you major in a specific science, or set of sciences. You need only do really well in the classes that you do take, and do especially well in the science classes you take.

You would take classes like biology, chemistry, physics, etc. However it depends on what branch of science you want to go into, the req will probably vary. If you were to major in chemistry of course you’d have to take more chem classes then if you wanted physics for example so just be sure to pick your program early so you know what exactly you need to take. It will just depend.

As for the foreign language, my college only requires it for a B.A. so if you want a major leading you to a degree in science NOT a bachelor of arts, then you wouldn’t need to take foreign language at all. Check with your school, they might be different. A second language would be useful, but it might not be mandatory with your major.

Pre-med isn’t a major. Most students who want to go to medical school consider themselves as pre-med. Pre-med courses consist of: 1 year of general chemistry + lab, 1 year of organic chemistry + lab, 1 year of physics +lab , 1 year of biology + lab, & 1 year of calculus. For schools such as Stanford, they highly advise you to take a foreign language class such as Spanish.

If you want to go to medical school, you don’t have to be a science major, just make sure you take these classes. Major in something you enjoy learning about. & best wishes to you!
