My advice is to complete all of your education and training in Canada and then emigrate. It’s a lot easier once you’re through than it is to try to be accepted as a “foreign” student.
You can take the USMLE Step 1 exam now, which I would encourage you to do since it tests your knowledge of the basic sciences. If you wait until you are ready to come to the US you may have forgotten too much. You may have to come to a US state to take the exam, but you can read up on that by going to the web site at: http://www.usmle.org/
As to whether you have to be a citizen of the US to practice medicine here, I’m not sure, but I don’t think you do. But to be sure, you need to check with the medical board in the state(s) you are interested in. To find that board you can visit this web site: http://www.fsmb.org/directory_smb.html
McGill has an excellent reputation. I hope you’re knocking their socks off!
