Can you graduate with honors when getting a masters degree?

Or can you only graduate with honors when getting a bachelors degree?

I wish that was the case! I’m getting a Master’s degree, myself, & I have the highest GPA of my life. I attribute this to learning something very specialized, & it’s something I have great interest in so I’m willing to put in the hard work.

Unfortunately, the “graduating with honors” thing is pretty much just specific to undergrad degrees. I think it’s basically to reward college students for getting high GPA’s throughout the 4ish years they are in school. It’s tough in college to “make the grade” because of all the distractions that come with being newly independent. Lot’s of times studies go on the back burner in favor of parties, greek life, etc. One REALLY has to work hard to graduate with honors in undergrad.

At the graduate level, most colleges & universities REQUIRE that you maintain at least a “B” average. The assumption is that if you’ve made it this far, you’re a smart cookie & you really don’t need any incentives to do well besides, you know, paving the way for your own future :).

Typically, no… because you can’t graduate with a Masters at all unless you’re getting good grades. Those who aren’t getting As and Bs tend to drop out (or are encouraged to do so). So technically, every graduate is hanging around an honors-level GPA.

However, if you have exams near the end of your Masters program, you can often “pass with distinction” (not every program offers this designation, but most do). Your thesis could also receive some sort of departmental award, if one’s available. This is the best equivalent to graduating with honors.

That being said, some Masters programs do have honors designations… but not many.

Most of what has been noted makes sense….I personally asked my guidance counselor about “honors” organizations for the program that I was enrolled in for my graduate studies and there was none for most programs. HOWEVER for my school unless a student is EXCEPTIONAL like straight A’s/4.0 GPA from the fifth session/quarter with no withdrawals or incompletes they are eligible for President’s List recognition. Also, there is “graduating with distinction” which means the student has/had a GPA of 3.85 and higher. But yes….it’s MANDATORY to maintain a 3.0 GPA so….and….IT IS A CHALLENGE where unfortunately not everyone is able to juggle life’s responsibilities (jobs, kids, marriage) along with social functions (which I personally had to sacrifice alot of those gatherings as a full-time grad student and full-time employee….and wife…and mother) and meet the demands of the courses/program at the same time. Some students would need to do one course at a time while working full-time or go to school full-time and work part-time, or take breaks in between sessions to get through the program. Again, it is a challenge but it’s doable….and it CERTAINLY feels so good if/when you’re able to be honored with being on the President’s List on a grad school level.

Most master’s programs do not have an honors degree. Since the minimum GPA for maintaining enrollment is a 3.0, there’s not such a range of high and low grades, making high scorers the average instead of the exception. Everyone is expected to make good grades in grad school.

Definition and Awarding of Graduation Honors:

Two types of graduation honors are awarded at City University of Seattle. Master degree candidates are eligible to earn President’s honors. Bachelor’s degree candidates are eligible to earn Latin honors. Honors are not awarded for Associate degrees or certificates of any kind.

For those graduating with a master’s degree:

 President’s honors are awarded if the student has graduated with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.90 or higher (with no rounding up).

 President’s honors are noted on the student’s final transcript under the graduation date and are also noted on the student’s diploma, with an “honors” label.

Yes you can, I know this because I graduated with honors. I agree with the other comments about expectations on getting good grades in graduate school, but it does appear that some schools, maybe not all, do recognize outstanding performance. I finished with a 4.0 and my transcript indicates I graduated with honors. I tried to post a picture of my transcript to show the note on it, but it didn’t work.

All you need to get your Masters later on would be to get your Bachelors degree. It doesn’t have to be Honors. However, if you are hoping to get accepted into a prestigious graduate school, Honors would probably help you out in getting accepted.
