What is the best thing about going to college?

I am 17 and I am starting to think more about college. Are college classes really hard? What is campus life like? Do you get used to being independant and on your own?

I loved college. The classes are a little harder than high school, but they’re also more interesting. And they don’t give you a lot of ‘busywork’ homework, it’s mostly reading, with a test or two, and usually a term paper or project.

It’s a little stressful being suddenly independent, and you can get really lonely sometimes, but it’s also nice to finally be able to make your own decisions, and even your own mistakes! And this is true even in your classes–you decide what classes you want, so you can follow your own interests.

I think the real value of college is that it exposes you to a lot of things. Some you won’t like but some will be wonderful. They will enhance your life! You’e just at that age where you are open to new experiences, new ideas and ways of thinking, so these things strike you in a way that they don’t in high school.

I always make the analogy of a pot-luck supper. Imagine you went to a pot-luck with everyone in the world. You show up and there’s this big long table that disappears into the distance. On this table is every kind of food in the world. Some are your favorite foods, some are foods you don’t like, but most of the foods are things you never heard of. Some of them you might not even classify as -food-!

Now the thing is, you have to go down this table and taste every single dish! It will take you four years to do this!

You will find lots of things you hate! You’ll gulp down your taste and make a face and say ‘Well, I’m glad -that’s- over!’ But some foods will be WONDERFUL! You’ll think ‘Wow! What a great discovery! I’m going to have some more of this!’

If you have the right attitude, you’ll wake up every morning thinking ‘Gee, I wonder what I’m going to eat today! Maybe it will be somethng great!’

That’s what college is like. It exposes you to many authors, artists, philosophical ideas, etc.etc. Some you will love, others you won’t care for. But all in all it will enrich your life.

The best part of college has to be the ladies. College classes are fairly hard depending on what you’re studying. However Film classes can be loads of fun, because you get to watch movies all the time and discuss them in class. It all depends on what you’re majoring in. Campus life is fun too, because there’s usually always something to do if you’re bored. Mixers, socials, keggers, dorm parties, movies, concerts, you name it. You get used to being independant, but that also depends on what kind of person you are and how far your family lives from the campus. If you are really close to your family then you might call them every chance you get, or you could already be really independant and only talk to them on holidays. Just choose carefully about what you wanna get out of college. If you wanna have fun then go to a party college, like any state college or something. But if you want to study, meet people of all walks of life, and be an intellectual then try a university.

I’ve just finished my first year and I’d say go. Classes, for me at least, are much easier than high school. High school was filled with busy work: you know, work sheets and stupid assignments. In college it’s just “read this” and then you take a couple of tests and write some papers. In most classes anyhow. No one holds your hand through the process which is great because you’re actually allowed to grow and learn. If you have a problem absorbing intellectual material on your own, I’d be wary. But, if you are actually interested in learning then go for it.

And to top all this off, you finally get to live alone. Don’t get me wrong, the security of having family around is wonderful, but it is also great to finally be on your own and to start finding out who you are on your own rather than as attached to a family unit.

I’d say do it: better mind, better job and future opportunities, overall greater growth–as other’s have suggested, however, try not to get wrapped up in drugs or alcohol. It can be very stupid and pathetic how much time some people focus on turning their minds off while attending an institution (and paying) to do the exact opposite. Other than that, enjoy the freedom.

College classes are no harder than high school classes sometimes, but sometimes are the hardest things you’ve ever tried, Don’t stress, the biggest part about college is being on your own with a roommate and having time to do whatever you want!. Find friends, Go to parties if you’re a socialite, find a club if you’re not. And don’t get into weed if you aren’t already!! It’s expensive and pointless!

Go through the first year as an experiment of sorts, when you’re done you’ll know that you love it, or that you hate it!

Don’t not try it just because you’re afraid

Well, I am a 24 year old female, and I attended a four year university. I actually think high school classes were harder! It obviously depends on where you go to school, but at my university I was surprised at how little homework we actually had. It was more about exams and papers, and about doing everything on your own. I really learned how to study. I wasn’t told how to study, or told to do anything really. I just learned it on my own. Before I moved into the dorm, honestly I was so scared! I really told my parents I wanted a dorm by myself! But, my roommate was amazing and we still keep in touch. I was used to being on my own from that first night. Being on campus at first is so cool, just the busy atmosphere, but then you get used to it. I have transferred from a four year university after 4 years to a 2 year college and its nice. I used to think you were “supposed to” go to a four year college. In high school it was pounded into all our heads. But I made my own decision and I’m grateful for having the opportunity I did, and the freedom to do what I wanted. Being on campus is so much fun. I met so many people and became very social right away. I totally didn’t think I would! But I do believe a college education is essential to growing up. Not just the degree, but the interactions and everything else you learn on the way!

going to college and/or the military helps you grow up and be independent. There will be some classes that will be hard, but if you don’t push yourself how can you ever become the best that you can be. College will be worth it in the long run. You also get to make life long friends in school also.

it varies greatly from college to college… everyone goes through a huge adjustment and most make it through just fine. i found classes a bit more challenging than high school ones… but that depends on your high school (i went to public school)… check out my website for more info about college life (we’re in the process of adding more content, but it’ll give you somewhat of an idea of what college life is like):
