What ever happened to the Presidents?

Working closely with the schools in my area I always ask the same question year after year. Every year for a month my kid has to learn about MLK and black history but yet the rest of the year there is minimal time spent on learning Presidents ,Capitols and other curriculum needed to get into college. Why is so much time spent on such a brief point in history and what do we really gain by it? Shouldn’t other cultures and historic figures be studied with the same enthusiasm?

I agree with you, when do our children get to learn about JFK, Nixon, Hoover, FDR, and ALL the Presidents? I think they make too much commotion about MLK. Yes he was a good man, but we need to balance the focus on ALL important parts of US history and it’s important People!, the scale should balance. {at present it doesn’t!}

I could not agree more, but, as a former teacher, retired, time is of the essence. You have Mothers, Fathers etc on the school board telling you what you need to teach. You have factions of racially motivated people, of sex biased people of religious people. So all of that comes in when the books are bought and the lesson plans are approved.

White guilt for past offenses. We think that if we shout loudly our regard for MLK that we will be forgiven for segregation and other sins against the blacks.
