Normally one calf is born at a time; however, some cases of twins have been recorded.
Bottlenose dolphins often live 30 to 50 years.
Bottlenose dolphins give birth to just one baby at a time; dolphin twins are very, very rare, and sadly normally die either before birth or soon after being born. The mother will not have any more calves until it has weaned the first one.
Females produce one offspring every two to three years after a gestation period of 12 months. Young stay with their mothers for one year. Sometimes, the mother will get help from another female (referred to as an “auntie”) in caring for offspring.
