Why are squirrels so scared of people?

They won’t even let me watch them climb a tree – they have to climb to the other side of the tree. I’m not counting big, fat, lazy squirrels, like the ones I used to see in Chicago parks. Spoiled animals!! I’m talking about non-park squirrels.

A couple of times my wife and I have raised baby squirrels that were abandoned for one reason or another.

We had to study and ask a lot of questions from vets and animal rescue people.

They are not scared if you raise them and constantly touch and hold them all the time. But when you go even a day or so without direct contact the instincts take over and they become detached.

From a rescue standpoint that’s what you want. They are a flight animal. In other words the natural defense is to run. They must have comfortable space.

Pay attention to the behavior and you will see it is not just humans. They keep their distance from everything and to a degree, even each other.

They are not a pack or herd animal like a horse which is also a flight animal but can accept a human as part of the herd.

I’m not recommending you try it ,but If you do find a baby that needs to be rescued you will need to provide exacting and constant care.

For instance regular milk will kill them. They need cats milk blended with yogurt for the bacterial content, fed at a specific temperature. Things like that make it very hard to do. Most rescue efforts end in death of the animal unless you really know what you’re doing.

We have tried to rescue a total of six and lost the first three until we got all the steps right. The last three we released into the yard. We can identify them and they stay in the area. They won’t let us get near them even though we raised them from before their eyes had even opened.

that is so frickin funny, so random. but after I read your Q I actually saw a squirrel in my mind scramble over to the other side of a tree to climb up…tree rat!

When I was 7 or 8, I saw one crawl into an empty chip bag… and I tried to snag it [desperate for a pet], and the thing freaked out in that bag so spastically that I backed off quickly, and decided “squirrels…too squirrelly for me.”

hayley has it as a rule the squirrels coming as much as you’ve got been humanized – individuals have feed them an excessive amount of now they desire a loose hand out rather of attempting to find their traditional meals simply forget about them – they would possibly not damage you you’ll be able to quit your foot at them and lunge ahead somewhat – so that it will scare them off

Because in most casses, anything watching a squirrel, might want to eat it. The squirrel is just protecting himself.

If you want to watch him, sit still and wait a while. Don’t do anything but watch.

He’ll get used to you after a while and let you watch.

You must be 100 times bigger than a squirrel. It gives you some serious intimidation factor. If you were to see a 100′ monster roaming around, you’d make yourself scarce too.

I guess it’s instinct, resulting from their having been hunted by people and stalked by other predators in the past. I have many squirrels on my property, and they’ve become accustomed to me to the point that they don’t flee at the sight of me, but they will flee if I approach them.

I know this question is super old
HOWEVER i have been able to feed some from my hand 3 to be exact.
I put food out over time and they gradually began to trust me.
My key was moving very slow, making the tick tick noise we do for cats, kneel down food in hand.
What can i say i like animals

Because squirrels are from the South originally, and people in the South like to kill them and eat them.
