Which is the best country in the world to live in if one were to teach English?

Me and my wife both graduated college, I have a BS in: Management and a TEFL certificate and 2 weeks teaching one-on-one with students. My wife is Chinese-American and has a BS in Math but no teaching experience but she did tutor while going to college. We tried China and we have had a horrible experience here so don’t recommend China because if one looks Asian then according to China they cannot teach English even if they were not born in China. I’m wondering if all of Asia is like this, if one looks Asian then is it harder for them to teach English or is this just China? As for me, I am visually impaired so I would need to teach where there is not much discrimination against those with disabilities. So my question is where is the best place for us to teach English in the world and get a good salary unlike China where the pay is low and the expenses are high. We would like to return to America after a few years so we can save money but where is the best country to teach in the world?

In the USA around Texas and Arizona would be a good place. There are a lot of people here in the US that don’t speak English, and descrimination because of a disability is not allowed (not saying it doesn’t happen, but there are legal ways to deal with that). Not only are English teachers needed for schools, but there are many adult English classes offered.

The best place to teach is Indonesia. there are many international schools here in Jakarta which might interest you like the Jakarta International School, Singapore International School, Bina Nusantara international, etc. Most of the teachers that taught in these international school are expatriats, so you would come to a familiar environment. The students that attend these schools are also those of a higher society background, and thus, they are very educated. Indonesia is not such a bad place to live actually, especially in south of Jakarta where most of the international schools are located. The environment in South Jakarta is safe, discrimination level is very low because a lot of expatriats live here. The salary range is also quite high for foreign teachers, the amount is usually in USD. Moreover, usually the school will provide a decent place to stay. To live in Jakarta for 2 people is not expensive, with only USD600/ month, you can have a decent place to stay for 2 person, good food and transportation and leisure, and pay all of the other bills like electricity, cell phone, etc. with USD1000/ month, you can all those above plus a car and a driver and a maid… good life eh…

I think Asia is out for both of you. I’ve spent the last 18 years living and teaching in Thailand, during which time I’ve seen quite a lot of the type of discrimination that goes on in this region.

In your situation, most developing or 3rd world countries are not worth a second look. Try a western country, maybe somewhere in Europe. Good luck!

If all is about a good salaray, so it will be difficult because the countries needing English teachers are mostly the underdeveloped ones, so the question of getting good money is out of the game. I dont think you’ll find a place to live in clover, so stay where you are and make a good job.

Good luck !

You could try Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam which are fast developing and govts are keen to raise the level of English in their efforts at globalization. Cost of living is affordable there.

Right here in the USA. There are many schools that need multilanguage teachers, especially Asian and Hispanic teachers with Toefle training. And especially in the Southwest of the US.
