What type of clothes (esp. shirts) do teachers wear?

Just got a position as a teaching assistant at an elementary school. I am in HOT Southern California, so short-sleeved is the option here. Polos? Oxfords? Henleys? What do you teachers wear to class on a daily basis?

At my school male teachers are supposed to have a collared shirt. Sleeve length doesn’t matter.

It totally depends on the environment of the school. Some schools are more lax, others have a much stricter dress code. If I were you, I’d start off with a short sleeved dress shirt and tie and go from there. It’s better to be overdressed and adjust than it is to be under-dressed. I’m willing to bet though, that on a daily basis, Polos would work just fine. 🙂

Depends on your contract language and the accepted culture at your school. Ask a fellow male teacher.

For the district I teach in (CA school), the contract states we can’t be told what to wear, but it must be professional. For men, collared, short sleeve shirts are the norm, especially on hot summer days. We do have the occasional tie person on a 100+ degree day, and we give him a hard time about it, but all in fun. We also have a teacher that is very relaxed in his dress, and some teachers speculate how effective he could be (parents do to!) and what kind of teacher he is, just based on his clothing.

I always try keep this in mind: what would I want my own child’s teacher to wear and still show that he cared about teaching?

Comfortable nice clothes, in good shape, not worn out colors. No flip flops, neat tennis shoes OK . No shorts, Basically a comfortable pair of pants and a nice shirt. Polos sound perfect! You can find a lot of nice looking inexpensive clothes at Target, KMart, JCPenney, or Sears. Some schools allow ironed jeans.

I would say the vast majority of shirts at the elementary level will be polos….in a medium to dark color. There is the dirt/food/paint factor.

Thanks for being one of the few men brave enough to work in an elementary school. Depending on the demographics of the school, you may be one of the few role models in their lives. I taught highschoolers who lost their beloved male custodian who was “Mr. D” to all the kids….for years. They actually had to move the viewing and funeral so that all from the very small town could attend.

Each school and school district has its own culture and traditions.

The range is from no regulations to a suit and tie. Some if these regulations are covered by local school district by-laws and regulations, court decisions, arbitration and teacher contracts

usually all of my profs (i’m in so cal too) wear short sleeved shirts. Polos are ok if its not too hot out, oxfords are cute, but please don’t wear white everyday your students will laugh about it… Everyone I know wears short sleeves unless its freezing out.

Always error on the side of over dressed rather than underdressed. Collared, button down would be best.
