What should I chose for my major?

I’m getting ready to be a freshman, and before I start college, I’d like to get an idea of what I’d like my major to be, so I won’t take classes that will just waste money. Right now I am a Social Studies Education major, and I’m starting to have my doubts. Originally I wanted to be a Family and Consumer Science Education major, but I thought it might be hard to find a job in that field, but I really enjoy learning about child development and things like that. I don’t know if I’ll end up happy with Social Studies because History never changes, I’d have to teach the same exact thing year after year, where FACS you can get more involved with your students, and teach more interesting topics, you know? I’m just confused, should I do Social Studies because I might find a job better, or FACS because I’m more interested in it? Please Help! Thanks!

I am in the same situation as Nely – SS jobs are few and far between. That said, remember there’s lots of child development-related issues in psychology and how “childhood” has changed throughout history. Social studies and history is ALWAYS changing – there’s something new to teach every year (just read the news ;P).

Another option you might consider is getting special education certfied – most states now require you to have a content major if you’re doing SPED and this greatly increases your hiring opportunities because schools have overwhelming special needs now.

If you double major in education, this also makes you more attractive to schools – they get 2 teachers for the price of 1. And don’t be too concerned that it might take you an extra semester or two to complete your degree; I promise it is well worth it if you come out extra certified. I was in such a rush to finish in 4 years to save tuition expenses, only to spend the next two years looking for jobs that wanted extra certification.

Social Studies Education Major Vs Family and Consumer Science Education Major. Hmmm. You say that you enjoy learning about child development etc. Well you would receive information about that as you are in the faculty of Education. The question is then do you wish to teach Social Studies or Family and Consumer Science. I’m not sure what FACS is but as a Social Studies Teacher the school board sets my guidelines and I have to teach the curriculum, but I have found that each year there are always new things to try and ways to get the information to my students.

It’s not only the information that you need to get across to your students but how passionately, and interesting you can make it. So if you feel that you are most passionate about FACS than Social Studies then maybe FACS is for you.

First off, if you feel that way about Social Studies, you shouldn’t be a Social Studies teacher. With Social Studies you can teach World History, Civics and Economics, U.S. History, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, World Cultures, Politics, etc (of course, you won’t start out teaching what you want to).

Anyway, you’d be surprise how many people are Social Studies Education majors. Finding a job in the field is pretty hard. I recently graduated with a degree in SS, secondary education and I can tell you that a lot of schools are more interested in FACS since if you’re not an Elementary teacher, it seems like you’re a SS teacher, and not a lot of people go for FACS anymore. A friend of mine did a double major in SS and FACS so you could look into that too. Since you’re only going to be a freshman, just worry about your core classes to start out with. Most people change their major several times before settling on one.

I appreciate your wanting not to waste money, time, and effort.

However, don’t be stressing over your major at this point. Surely your college will have some general requirements you have to take. Concentrate on them first. Get a feel for college.

In the meantime, talk to advisors and profs in the areas you think you would like to enter. Maybe an entirely new and different field will appeal to you.
