Read Japanese? I need to know the meaning of 2 Japanese Kanji. Need pronunciation in Japanese and Eng. trans.

I can forward these two characters via email. I desperately need to know what they mean in English. Also how they are pronounced in Japanese. I think one is kotobuki but because they are in an “artistic” form it is hard for me to decipher the strokes of the characters to translate.

Broadly speaking, Japanese kanji are Chinese characters (kan-ji means “Chinese character”). However, over the centuries, the Japanese have modified the writing of some (by no means all) kanji, so they appear either slightly different or quite different from the corresponding Chinese characters. In addition, the Japanese use certain kanji, and especially combinations of two or more kanji, to mean things that would not be the least bit apparent to a Chinese reader. And of course the pronunciations are different. Initially, when the Japanese started using the Chinese writing system, they tried to pronounce the characters in Chinese and to write using Chinese grammar; this didn’t work very well, and so gradually the characters were adapted to Japanese pronunciation and grammar. Basically each kanji has at least two pronunciations: the “Chinese” pronunciation (although today it’s nothing like Chinese) and the native Japanese word for the meaning of the character. For example, 人, or person, is pronounced “ren” in modern Mandarin, but at the time the language was introduced in Japan it was pronounced something like “nzien”). In Japanese, it is “hito” (the native Japanese pronunciation, but in certain combinations it is pronounced “nin” or “jin”, as in 一人前 (“ichi-nin-mae”). So if you’re learning Japanese, you’ll have to learn at least two (and usually more) completely different readings for each kanji. I hope that helps.
