The Great Gatsby is really about what is known as “the American dream”.
It is about being really poor and becoming exceedingly rich and famous in no time. It is true that the notion of “class” is also a theme in the book, but it is not THE central theme. Class and criticism for the “new rich” are present in the book, in accordance with the notion of following the American dream and getting what you want: money, fame, and women (in Gatsby’s case, his darling Daisy, who met him as a poor soldier going off to WWI but married Tom, the rich man).
