What are some good classroom mangagement ideas that goes along with a STOP AND THINK policy?

I was thinking about a stop light but that only has three colors, red, yellow, and green. That’s only 3 consequences and I really wanted 5. You know, one warning- verbal, 2nd- time in “thinking chair”, etc until you finally get to red (note to parents). Hopefully, no one will get to red.

Any ideas?

I was going to suggest the stop light…that worked fantastic in my classroom !!!

You could always make a clothes line and put faces in different colors and hang them with clothes pin…make the child hang them…sometimes once is enough of an impact especially when the rest of the class is watching them.

Best of luck and thanks for helping shape the minds of our future.

When I taught elementary special education, most of my class would have been on red within the first 15 minutes of the school day so I didn’t use colors. I used a hierarchy of consequences (and rewards for showing appropriate behavior) listed in order next to the classroom rules.

From minor to major (or multiple) infraction(s):

Verbal warning/reminder, sit and think chair, write a “think about it” note home, loose privilege (i.e. 5 minutes recess, loss of classroom job for the day, or whatever), call mom/dad to confess, office visit, and so on. Whatever you think will motivate students to do the right thing. I really liked using the hierarchy systems because the students always knew what would happen if they did not follow a rule or what would happen next if the inappropriate behavior continued. If you think about it, what does “red” mean? It is very clear to a child what “loose 5 minutes of recess” means.

Be sure to reward appropriate behavior too. You will have more kids wanting a sticker than wanting a chance to sit in the “stop and think” chair.

My sister in her third grade classroom does something with a ladder. Each student has a flower on a clothespin, and if a student doesn’t get in trouble each day, he or she gets to move up a rung. Once students reach the top, they are rewarded with a prize. I always find positive rewards out weigh negative consequences, but I also know those are necessary because I teach high school.

You may want to think about comparing as we have in the event of a national emergency, a series are broken down into 5 Defense Conditions.

DEFCON 5 Normal peacetime readiness

DEFCON 4 Normal, increased intelligence and strengthened security measures

DEFCON 3 Increase in force readiness above normal readiness

DEFCON 2 Further Increase in force readiness, but less than maximum readiness

DEFCON 1 Maximum force readiness.

I think you can apply as needed. Hope this helps you think of a better idea. Good Luck.

I would stay away from these elaborate classroom management systems…you are focusing too much on consequences…

A wise teacher once said, “the resentment and humiliation this causes lasts anywhere from three seconds to a lifetime”

I suggest focusing more on being proactive…stopping behavior problems before they occur…

In other words, the best classroom management plan is a strong instructional plan.

Use teaching strategies that keep all your students actively involved in all of your lessons…if you can decrease student boredom, decrease student confusion, and increase class participation you wont need to resort to these elaborate systems.

The primary classrooms I go into use a card system with colored cards in library card pockets on a board, one pocket for each student. When the student breaks a rule, s/he “turns a card” by putting the front card in back, so the next color shows. That way you can have as many colors as you want.
