Elementary Music Teacher AND Night Programs????

Do any of you music teachers out there have night program with your students? Last year (at my new school) I have 4 programs in the day and night with my students throughout the year. Administration said that this was the tradition.

I felt taken advantage of. I feel that if teachers have part-time jobs, music performances of their own, and are attending night-school, night performances should be optional. I’ve since read that administrators are not required to have teachers participate in more than THREE night events. With teacher-parent conferences, and other parental program, I feel that night performances with elementary students is not right.

Do any of you have comments on this matter?? Thanks for your responses.

I would think that your teaching contract would dictate how many concerts are to be required. As far as day or evening performances, again it may be dictated by contract or go on past practice. Check your contract.

I work in Ohio. My contract states two concerts per year at the elementary level. There are more concert requirements at junior high and high school. Day or evening is not listed, however….I usually have mine in the evening to allow more parent participation. I did work in one inner-city school which did not allow me to have concerts at night….this was principal-directed.

I think that whether you have th program at night or during the day depends on what kind of school you have. For example, if you can’t get parents to come to an afternoon program because they work, then an evening performance might be in order. If you can’t get students to come back to school in the evening, then a daytime performanc might be in order. I personally favor the day performance for student and any parents that can make it. This also serves as a dress rehearsal for the the evening performance.
