How can I get teaching certification with a B.A.?
I know each state is different for education, but right now I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism and can’t stand the profession. I’m interested in teaching either writing or speech communication at the secondary level. What steps do you think I would need to do this?

It depends on your state, but in the state I live in, people who already have a bachelor’s degree can get a teaching certificate while teaching through a program called alternative certification (or something like that). The person can start working in a teaching setting while doing coursework in education at night, online, or in special seminars. You should call your state’s office of education and inquire to see if there is such a program in your state.

It really depends on where are you planning to teach. Here in the Philippines, BA graduates also teach in the secondary level. They are however encouraged to take up higher degrees (like masters) related to their subject matter. Taking up Ed subjects also helps. Just try to apply for the job and your would-be employers might openly suggest the steps you can take.

You may need a to take a test, and maybe a year or two of classes. Or you may be where there is a program to start workingand earn credits as you go. Many places will even take people before they graduate, depending on how much they need teachers.
So,yes, start looking for jobs and find out what they require.

If you live in Kansas the only qualification is that you are still breathing. A BA can substitute teach and from there you can get certified w/o a test. I live in the state capitol and they’ve hired over 50 new teachers straight out of the Philippines. A week or so before school started the TV crew followed them while they went to their classes to learn to speak English better. Can you imagine? Of course, the city schools are not meeting No Child Left Behind testing. Duh!!! We are driving my grandkids to another school district.

ok i don’t know where you’re from but In Australia, if you have a Bachelor degree, you can just do a Graduate Diploma of one year to become a teacher
