Teaching certification question?

I’m in school to get my certification but I want to move to another state when I graduate. Is there a way I can teach in another state without having to go through another four years of college?

From what I have heard, it depends on the state that you are coming from and the state that you are going to. From Michigan, I could have gone to some states with just applying for a teaching certification in that state (I know Florida accepts the MI cert). Some states require an additional class or two, but it should not be another 4 years. I would suggest contacting the state department of education that you are considering moving to and see what requirements there are. Also, I would think that the district that you get a job in could also help you with that.

I just moved from New York to Texas. I had my certificate in New York (and now Texas). Most states just require that you have a degree, then you will also have to be fingerprinted in that state, as well as, take that states Teaching Exams (which will run you about 80 dollars each).

Some states have the same exams which are the PRAXIS series. In that case you have to meet their passing score (they are all about the same) and send copies of your scores to that state education department. Unfortunately some states have altogether different tests, but they all ask similar questions.

You can usually find any specifics out of that states education website. It isn’t too difficult of a process, trust me. Best of Luck!

Probably. Your best bet is to go to the NY Department of Education website and take a look at their requirements. Since you’ll be certified in another state, there may be a shorter/lessened qualification for you to go through. Although, if you won’t have actual teaching experience (not student teaching), you may need to got through a whole new program. Also, you can read up on the No Child Left Behind Act, it has a lot of teacher-certifying requirements that all states have to abide by.

As others have said.. each state governs its own educational standards. In some states all you have to have is a bachellor’s degree and pass a background test.

But if your going to California your screwed. Cali requires. Post grad work to get your credential in the specific area of teaching in the meentime you are required to do unpaid student teaching, then pass a CBEST (california basic educaional skills test) The CBEST is pretty easy. Then after that you have to pass the CSET tests designed for a teacher’s specific area…(chemistry, multiple subject, math.)

After all that our public education is still a bad joke. Stay away from california

depends on which state. In Virginia, you just pay the money for a certificate. In Texas, with a degree, you just have to take the test to qualify. Look it up online for the individual state.

You shouldn’t have to. But you may just have to pay a fee.
