Should teachers be allowed to teach either the “Evolution Theory” or the “Creationism Theory” in schools?

Ever since State V Scopes, the famous Tennessee “Monkey Trial” in 1925, the biology classroom has been the site of battle pitting science against religion.

Creationism is not a theory. it is faith. By definition items of faith do not need proof. If someone wants to try to call it scientific they are creating two major mistakes.

First – it is bad faith. Open up faith to proof, and you just might get the opposite of what you want. Look at the young earth dinosaur park – (i dont know the name) its laughable, and brings into question the type of faith practiced…cult?

Second – 100+ years of scientific work in all areas of science cannot be compared to an objection based on faith. Schools rightly hold evolution as one of the key standards – there is NO work on creationism behalf. (there cannot be…) If you want to call it science, start offering evidence and go through peer reviewed channels as all science is.

I think the main point that is missed here, is that Creationism cannot be taught in the science classroom because it is not a science. If you teach it in any other context, whether it be history or literature or religious studies, it is ok. However, Creationism is not a science and therefore it cannot be taught as a science. As Eri pointed out, you can only teach science in science.

Currently, the Theory of Evolution is the best and most accurate scientific model that explains the current mechanisms of the life in a scientific manner. That is why Evolution is taught in the science classes. It is a science. The same thing holds true for the Big Bang Theory. These models have been tested and modified according to scientific methods. These are the best models to explain how the world and universe works currently.

Biology is a science and thus, one cannot teach a non-science in a science class. Many people want to toss in creationism into the science class where it does not belong because it is not a science. That is why there is a big debate. However, time and time again, it has been ruled that one cannot teach a non-science in a science class and logically this should make sense.

Remember, science is what brought forth all our current medicines and technologies.. We have computers, cell phones, cars, etc. We must be doing something right.

Evolution and creationism are both subjects that should be discussed, though preferably in a religious education class, not a science class.

I think that the proponents of either theory for the most part miss the point, and that is (in my humble opinion) that neither are nececessarily mutually exclusive. Leaving aside the notion that the first book of Genesis is the literal truth – it isn’t – it’s a metaphor – if you want to accept that God created the world, then why should that not be an evolutionary process. After all, mankind is STILL evolving. Compare how are we are now .. our life expectancy, our medical, scientific, engineering, architectural, and musical attainments .. with how we were only 200 years ago, then consider how different we must be from 20,000 years ago, then I believe we are continually evolving. You could say that God is still creating, but even if God packed up creating (whenever that was) that creation is still subject to continuing change.

So let us continue to discuss the pros and cons of each theory, but let us not fall into the trap of assuming that one is completely true and the other completely false.

Committed evolutionists, even though they claim to understand how the world and all within it has developed, have absolutely no idea WHY!

I’ll finish on a lighter note, with mention of the dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac .. he lays awake all night wondering if there is a dog.

Evolution theory is on par with germ theory, the theory of gravity, and nuclear theory – it has at least as much if not much more evidence to support it. It is scientific – it is repeatable, testable, observable.

Whereas creation is none of these things. It’s religion trying to pass as science – and failing every test. It’s equivalent to teaching 1+1=3 and letting the kids make up their own minds. It’s detriemental to their education.

Students should be taught about the foundations and criticisms of both. The goal should be to teach them how to think critically about opposing theories and ask better questions.
