For Teachers – do you dislike when students write in (neat) cursive or do you like it or do you not care?

It’s been proven that neat-looking papers get higher grades than messy ones. Some teachers do it on purpose but mostly, it’s a subconscious thing.

If they are in grade 4 and above I think they should write in neat cursive as often as possible. HOWEVER, if the cursive is not neat and easy to read on state test they must print. Why lose point because it cant be read ? I also encourage they to write in ink for practice.

I prefer cursive. Most students can write faster in cursive once they have practiced. However, I don’t care if they print. It should be whatever type of writing is easiest for the child to write and the reader to read. This is from an elementary perspective.

I teach tenth graders and I always tell them to write in the manner that is the neater. Honestly, I prefer cursive because it is more sophisticated, but some of students I teach can’t write/read in cursive. Sometimes I’ll have a student ask me to read my cursive writing on the board and I have very good penmanship.

I teach college, and I couldn’t care less whether students write in cursive or not, so long as I can read it. Personally, I stopped writing in cursive as soon as they stopped forcing me to (7th grade, I think). Even though everyone always said that you write faster in cursive, I never found that to be true for me.

I taught once with a bunch that absolutely required cursive for 4th and up. As a science teacher I don’t really care. I also stopped writing cursive as soon as I was allowed. I do ban gel pens. yuck. you can do your notes in it, but nothing I have to read.

As long as I can read it, I am okay with messy and neat handwriting. If I can read it I am happy! That simple.

I don’t care, as long as it’s legible, and it a normal-colored ink.
