Questions about becoming a philosophy professor?

I want to become a professor in philosophy at a community college, but I would like to know these details:

What salary would I expect to make starting out with a Masters from Berkeley?

What is the demand for philosophy professors?

What would the work load be first starting out?

The work load as one has become adapted to the environment?

And yea, that’s all I can think of for now, but additional input is also valuable, thanks in advance.

Community college salaries vary by district…so your best bet is to contact the Human Resources Dept at some CCs you are interested in teaching. The salary schedules are a matrix of education (columns based on degree and units past a degree; eg BA + X units, MA + X units, Ph D) and years of teaching experience (rows) with some districts setting a maximum of 6 years teaching credit when first placing you on the schedule. Then, step increases occur….which means you stay in a salary bracket for X years before getting a raise to the next “step”.

For the demand:

start with US Dept of Labor Occupational Outlook http://www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm

for CA labor outlook, go to http://www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov/

Workload: full-time teaching load is 5 classes @3 semester credits); part-time is limited to about 2 classes, @3 semester units. Both types of instructors have the freedom to choose their textbooks for the class, though some schools are more formal and require an oversight committee to approve your selection.

Full-timers have an option to teach additional classes (max 2, 3 unit classes…but pay is at an hourly rate…not the same as your full time load salaried position.

Full timers are expected to maintain conference/office hours X hrs per week and participate in campus committees X hrs per week depends on the school.

Tenure is about 4 years to achieve with period evaluations by peer, dean of your division, and VP of Instruction.

Union dues, depending on the organization can vary from a flat fee to 1% of your annual salary.

Critical thing for a newbie MA…teaching experience at the CC level (meaning adults) with some districts placing an emphasis on teaching in a multi-cultural environment. Read the job announcements carefully about the # years teaching experience required. So teaching part-time is one way to do this….so contact the Human resources and the relevant departments and file a resume with them or ask if they maintain a part time instructor pool to get you listed there.

Some departments require a teaching demonstration.

Sign up with the CA CC registry and file your resume here for possible job leads https://www.cccregistry.org/jobs/index.aspx

Contact a local CA CC for possible job fairs conducted by the CA CC or check the CA CC website…I think this happens about 2 times a year.

OK, hope this helps. Best wishes.

You’ll have a mighty hard time getting a tenure-track humanities professorship with only a masters in Phil. Most of the ads calls for at least two master degrees in related fields (smaller CC’s you might need to teach a related subject) or preferably a Ph.D in your area. The competition is fierce so a weak cv wont help you. You can find work as a part-time lecturer but the pay is horrible and course scheduling is not based on your input so you could teach a class at 8am with nothing in between and have to come back to campus to teach again the same day at 7pm. A lot of these lecturers also teach at places like prisons or have to drive out to an extension campus 40 miles away for one class. Needless to say, there’s plenty of openings as a lecturer. Don’t get caught in that trap unless you’re already independently wealthy and dont mind the abuse.

you won’t be able to easily exchange right into a professor interior the united kingdom, you’re able to be chosen by way of your friends. you may could have a Doctorate (PhD) in philosophy first. you’re speaking many some years away, if ever. uk

Salary: I’m guessing, maybe $40,000/year, tops.

Low demand. I gather Philosophy majors are a “dime a dozen” profession.

Teaching maybe 4-5 classes.

Later: teaching about the same, plus leading some groups, like clubs or professional groups for students, plus supervising TA’s.
