How can I can make all of the children in the classroom feel equal?

tomorrow I have to substitute for an ESOL class. The class has a few Africans, Asians, and Hispanics students. How can I make them all feel equal? I don’t want to treat certain ones different. Does anyone have any information on how to teach a class full of diversity? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The easiest way to make them all feel equal is to treat them all equally.

First, plant the seed in them that they are equal.

In other words, start by telling them.

Use M&M(s) as an illustration to demonstrate how they are different colors on the outside, but the inside of each and every one is the same on the *inside.* ***This establishes that they are equal.***

After you’ve planted the seed, you have an equal responsibility to help them *cultivate* that seed by the way YOU treat them *and* by how you they treat each other (especially in your presence because if something goes wrong, YOU can do something about it).

Good luck.

Learn about their cultures. Ask them questions, take an interest in how each of them is unique and what they have to offer and can teach others.

I sub as a side hobby/job. My classrooms quickly learn that they either fly high, or crash and burn as ONE. One screw up kid can ruin it for the whole class. If they have to pay for his screw up, it’s suddenly not so funny.
