Question about teaching?

Is it possible to become a teacher if you have a criminal record for misdemeanor counts that are 20 yrs old?

Each state has its own guidelines dealing with previous criminal records. Your best bet would be to find your state’s board of teacher certification website and begin looking for regulations concerning this issue. If the site doesn’t give you a clear-cut answer, call their office and simply ask. I have taught in three states and every time I’ve had to communicate with the state teacher certification office, they’ve been more than helpful with even the simplest of questions.

As long as the misdemeanor wasn’t anything to do with children…but they will look into everything… and they will make this part of the referencing system to a new principal…. (in the public system). Take heart…the new Director General of Education came “out” and sent an email to all staff- I mean EVERYONE that he had a criminal record and was convicted of drug possession and that he was a drug user when he was 20…. seems if it is okay for the head honcho it “should” be okay for you.

Perhaps you could ring him!!! he noted that he had shown that you could make a mistake and go on to bigger and better things in life… I have to agree…Now its just up to the staffing people…

It depends on the regulations governing the recruitment of teachers of the country.I know in some countries people with criminal records have been recruited.

If you were a juvenile when it happened, you can probably have it expunged. Otherwise, it depends on the school district.
