Job opportunities for teachers?

Hi! I’m a freshman this year at a state university currently majoring in nursing and Russian. Recently I’ve been considering pursuing a degree in teaching or TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) instead of nursing but I’m wondering if this would be an unwise choice because in my home state, Michigan, teaching jobs are not very secure & also do not pay very well at all. Could you please tell me what the job situation for teachers in like in your state? Also, if anyone knows of possible career opportunities that might be available with a TESOL degree that would be helpful too! Thanks. : )

Did you mean TESOL certificate?

How would this sound:

If you are considering a career in teaching, get your TESOL cert. and go abroad to teach for a year. It’s very easy to find jobs all over the world if you are ESL qualified. And, with your Russian language ability, why not go for Russia? If you also hold a degree in a related, or unrelated, field that will also help you to secure a job immensely.

Once you have your year’s worth of experience in teaching overseas, you can make up your mind if it’s right for you.

If you’re looking to make lots of money, stay out of teaching. Teachers will always be needed, but the openings are often at the inner city schools where there are many problems, and often not much money to pay teachers. The TESOL would open up many more opportunities for you. You would have more opportunities if you live somewhere that there are lots of immigrants. TESOL could also probably get you a job in businesses that deal with people who speak other languages. (Spanish would be the biggest language opportunity). An opportunity that many people don’t know about in teaching is to work for the Department of Defense Schools. You could teach overseas in a school on a military base. It would give you a chance to “see the world”. There are a lot of children of Hispanic parents in the military schools who would need your TESOL expertise.

I also am in a teaching program in Michigan and I know the outlook is not good for us. 🙁 My teachers have told us Las Vegas and the Carolinas are places booming with teaching positions. They also say that there are always going to be jobs available in Michigan, just that the competition is going to be harder. As for pay, remember that if some places pay more the cost of living cost more as well. You can look into Early Immersion schools, schools where English speaking students are taught another language from a young age. Often these schools teach students their lessons 65% + of the time in the second language.

Best of Luck with your major and your future career. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the both of us!

Teaching is a frustrating profession….it is a calling, for sure. Nursing will provide more “upward mobility” and financial opportunities. A nurse that speaks another language is a big bonus.

YOu can continually be a math educate. People continually want the ones. You would be individual educate or paintings for a tutoring manufacturer. You would aslo replacement within the university you’re retiring from. This approach you will not be complete time, however nonetheless get to perform a little little bit of instructing.
