To be a lawyer you need excellent reading and comprehension skills; excellent communication skills – both written and verbal; excellent research skills.

I would suggest extra activities like debate team and volunteer work. Good People skills are needed too.

You need to get an undergrad degree (it does NOT matter what it is in!!!) then you take the LSAT and apply to law schools. So that is 4 years undergrad and usually another few years in law school. Then you take the Bar Exam. I think most people also do an internship with a law firm or a judge.

You will need good grades in college to get into a good law school. It is VERY competitive.

Ask around and find out if your parents or their friends or teachers or anyone knows a lawyer or someone who works in a law library or something like that who will let you spend a few weeks of your summer volunteering to get a feel for the profession.

Also, look in your library for the Occupational Outlook Handbook. It is usually on reference and must stay in the building. but- it will tell you what kind of education you need for the job; salary ranges; typical environments, etc. its a great source.

You have plenty of time! I went through 4 years of college before I decided to go ahead and get my Masters in Library and Information Sciences. My best friend in college is a lawyer and I know several now.

You must be able to read very well, for analysis and clarity. Attention to detail is paramount. You must be able to write well, and precisely. you must be able to argue both sides of an issue. If you are just now entering high school, this is a good time to focus on grades. You will need to successfully complete an undergraduate degree with good grades. I’d recommentd a 4 year degree in paralegal studies from an ABA accredited school. You’ll be ahead of so many others in practical skills, legal research and writing, etc. Then you take an exam called the LSAT. After that, you apply to law schools. You will be rated on your grades, scores, and professor recommendations among other things. After you graduate from law school, which is usually a 3 year program with your juridis doctorate, you have to take and pass a bar exam. It is a wonderful and rewarding field.

When I went to University I had a few friends studying law – and the one thing they got told pretty early in their 1st year was the drop out rate – they start with about 500 students 1st year and over 75% drop out prior to the start of the last year. Its hard, I saw the law students studying and they would be awake at all hours of the day studying for exams with books that were thicker than bricks.

Its not easy, but something ya gotta work hard for, and yes great reading skills help cause you read a chit load of stuff.

Having good reading skills is really helpful, not only for law school (which will make the program much easier for you) but for college and the rest of high school.

Anything we might want to do is hard. Nothing is easy. But if we really want it, we stick with it and get through the rough spots.

Regarding your grades, you need really good grades in high school to get into college and really good grades in college to get into law school. Study hard and if you need any extra help, see your teacher after class and/or try to get a tutor. Stay focused on your goal. Anything is possible if we focus hard enough on making it happen. Good luck -:)

Law school is quite competitive and difficult to get through. To be honest, being a good reader isn’t going to help you in being a lawyer. For skills, I’d suggest excellent logic and reasoning for any area of law and excellent debate skills if you want to work in an area of law that requires appearing in court (not all lawyers appear in court for their jobs).

If you want to get into a top-notch law school after college, plan on having excellent LSAT scores along with excellent grades.

odds are you will change your mind millions of times until you decide. I am 18 and I have thought and reaserched almost every career there is, to try and decide. esspecially this last few months. I know someone who is trying to be a lawyer now. He is just about to get his bachelor’s degree after 4 years and he still has 3 years to go in law school. Plus passing the BAR test to be a lawyer. Its ruff, you have to be good at studing and be above average smarts is what I recommend. I wouldn’t worry about deciding now, you have plenty of time. just keep it in the back of your mind.

not if you have the committment to attain your goal. That takes discipline of self….choosing not to go to the skating party on Friday night when you know you have a test on Monday morning…choosing to hang out whith perhaps a different type of crowd to assist you in attaining your goal….it is mostly about the choices you make and your committment to them…..and one day you will reach your goal. I would first start out with short term goals..for instance–completing High School–, then in the midst of completeing High School, begin to re-think your next short term goal–of course–do not let your long term goals fade from your efforts…and you can attain your dreams…and be in a position to actually be effective and to assist those who are in need of your expertise.

There are many variances in the Law field. Speak to you counselor at school and they can help provide you with the tools to decide on your career.
